Getting interested in politics is very easy to do, but getting involved in politics can be a little more difficult. When you’ve set your sights on a career in politics, you need to consider how you’re going to find your way in. There are various ways you could get started and find your calling.
Volunteer
Volunteering for a political campaign is a great way to get an exciting taste of the political world, and show that you can work hard too. Campaigns always need people to stuff envelopes, knock on doors and make phone calls, among other things to help candidates and causes.
Join a Party
Affiliating yourself with a particular political party is a good way to get started in politics. You might choose to run for a seat on your local party committee, which can give you a valuable experience. You can start getting your name out there and making the right contacts.
Run for Office
If you’re thinking of running for office, starting at the small, local level is best. You can consider running for a seat on your town council or local school board, for example. Most politicians start here and work their way up to bigger roles.
Educate Yourself
You don’t necessarily have to have a certain level of education to get into politics, but getting educated can certainly help you get a foot in the door. A bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree in subjects related to politics can give you the skills, knowledge, and connections you need.
