4 Reasons You Should Ditch The Dating Apps

You would think that dating in the modern world would be easier. You just need to pull out your phone and open a dating app and swipe through hundreds of potential dates in your area. Send a few messages, swipe left on a few creeps, and you’ve got a date lined up for that night. If you’re single, it should be the best thing in the world because you don’t have to deal with the awkwardness of approaching a stranger and trying to strike up a conversation, only to find out that they’re already in a relationship or they’re not interested in you. Dating apps match you with people that have shown an interest in you, so you can avoid that embarrassment entirely. On the whole, dating apps have made things a lot more efficient, but is it really the best way to meet people? While there are a lot of good things about dating apps, there are also a lot of bad things. These are the biggest downsides of using a dating app.

Safety Issues

One of the biggest downsides of dating apps is that there can be a safety issue. It’s always a risk meeting with somebody that you don’t really know very well, but if you meet somebody out somewhere and chat to them, you can get an idea of what they are like and even if they are not completely honest, you at least know they are who they say they are. But when it comes to online dating, it’s so easy for somebody to create a fake profile with fake pictures, so you have to be very careful. It’s so important that you take the right steps to stay safe on a first date with somebody and make sure that you are not putting yourself at risk.

False Impressions

Even if people aren’t dangerous, that doesn’t mean that they won’t give you a false impression. They can say whatever they like about themselves and when you are communicating over texts, it’s easy for people to think out their answers carefully and present themselves as someone completely different from who they actually are. If you are looking for a serious relationship, you don’t want it to be built on a false version of who that person is and if people are not being honest about themselves, you could be wasting your time. People can always lie about themselves, no matter how you meet them, but even if you were talking on a free chat line for dating, people would be more genuine than they would over message. If you are looking for a long term relationship and you want to find somebody that really matches your personality, online dating isn’t always the best way to do it because you don’t always get a true sense of the person.

Too Much Choice

When you are looking through Netflix, trying to find something to watch, you can spend hours scrolling through because there is just too much choice. You don’t want to commit to something in case there is something better further down the list. The same can be said of online dating sometimes. When people have access to so many potential partners, they are less likely to be decisive and commit to a relationship with one person. Instead, they will keep their options open, just in case somebody that is better suited to them comes along later on. This fear of missing out on the right person often means that people are not as willing to take a chance on a relationship with somebody, so finding serious relationships is harder in online dating.

It Can Be Addictive

It always makes you feel good to know that people are interested in you and it gives you a big confidence boost, but that does cause some problems where online dating apps are concerned. A lot of people find that they enjoy the feeling of having lots of matches and getting messages from a lot of different people that want to date them. But after a while, it stops being about meeting somebody and forming a relationship, it’s more about the confidence boost they get from matching with people and chatting with them, and that can become very addictive. But if you have that attitude towards dating apps, you will quickly become bored with new relationships and instead want to get back on the app so you can match with new people.

Dating apps can be a great way to meet people and there are a lot of people out there that have started some amazing relationships through them. However, there are a lot of downsides so you should maybe consider going about it the old fashion way. I’m just saying…

  1. As a online dater, I absolutely agree with your post. I have been guilty of excessively checking a dating app to see who likes me, or who is messaging me. When I am out of that moment, I realize the “conversations” tend to be the same. I talk about my highlights, other person follows. Meet for drinks, see how things go. If I don’t feel the connection is mutual…bye felicia.. and I am off matching with somebody new.

I do have a question, how does a millennial girl like myself meet a date offline? I manage a business where I work late nights and 50 hours or more a week. And I just moved to a new city 6 months ago.

    1. It’s really tough out here for us! I would suggest maybe trying out a few networking events in the area, if you have a free evening. You can connect with people on a friendship level or you might even come across a romantic connection. That might be a good start for making general connections in a new city, but hopefully the person you meet will be somewhat on your level as a career-minded individual who is also looking to make connections. If you try it out, please let me know how it goes!
