Well-being is a phrase that you hear about a lot. But how many people can define what it means? For some, well-being is merely a wishy-washy concept and something that they don’t need to explore any further as they are doing just fine, thank you very much! In truth, thinking about your well-being and how you can take care of it, and improve it further is vital.
Your well-being is about so much more than whether you are feeling happy (although, that can be part of it). Well-being is all-encompassing and covers every aspect of your life. Relationships, job satisfaction, physical health, emotional health – all of these factors make up your overall well-being. When one of these elements is suffering, the balance is disrupted, and your well-being deteriorates.
The need for balance is a common theme in life. Without balance, something has to give. Once life becomes unbalanced in one area, everything else can become unbalanced. Having balance in your life and maintaining your well-being is mostly about knowledge. Knowing how to take care of your well-being, and how to recognize the signs that it is out of sync is crucial.
Well-being in relationships (how to love without neglecting yourself). Relationships are complicated. It’s all very well taking care of your emotional well-being, but add another person to the mix, with their thoughts and opinions, and achieving balance gets that bit harder to maintain.
The infatuation that comes with a new-found love is a great feeling, but don’t lose yourself within it. For your own well-being, your identity matters, who you are on your own is important. Of course, you should be in a romantic relationship if you want to be. But be sure that the relationship is healthy, set your boundaries, and stick with them.
Well-being at work. Ask the majority of people whether they like their job, and you can be pretty sure most of them will say that they don’t. The majority of people work out of necessity rather than because they want to. They may say that they are stuck because they need the money, or that the hours are convenient. These may be valid reasons why you could stay in your job but are not reasons why you should. That’s not to say that you should give up your job right now. It means that if you have always wanted to work with horses, go and learn about horses. If you need to earn money, you may as well earn it doing something that you love.
Physical and emotional well-being. Were you brought up to think that self-care is selfish? Many people experience guilt when it comes to taking care of themselves. Think about it for a second, and you will see how untrue this is. Self-care means that you are doing your best for yourself; you are taking care of your mind and your body. Self-care matters because your well-being matters – you matter. Self-care is not an indulgence; it is a necessity.
